Black Album #1

On Friday I was lucky enough to be at a full dress rehearsal of Avant Garde Dance’s new production ‘Black Album’. A compilation of familiar old and exciting new, it was performed on Saturday evening. Even though I was the only photographer there, taking good quality shoots was really challenging. Despite the fact that I know myself to be really good at low light high-motion images, I really had fun here; partly because I love the way Tony Adigun turns ideas inside out in his choreography, partly because the dancers gave out such a great energy and also because of the lighting.

Capturing an evocative image of someone dancing inside columnar pool of light is easy, doing the same when that person is dancing with or outside the light, or when everyone is bathed in brilliant floods of light or when the dancers weave in and out of a light line. You’ll see that in my next few posts.

I’m looking forward to processing more of these. Hopefully I’ll have time to do so soon. Meanwhile don’t worry if you missed this dark compilation because I’m sure it’ll be toured with the time is right.
