Last Monday evening I went to a celebration of Ugandan culture. One of a series of events associated with the World Travel Market, I choose it because I wanted to learn more and because I had been assured that traditional dances would be performed.

They were ably explained by the dance troupe who it turns out live – and give lessons – in London. As the dance movements were characterised by the rapid movement of their backsides and the different angles taken by upper body and arms, this is what I wanted to capture in my images.

I decided that this could best be done by freezing the dancers’ faces and torsos while allowing a small t of motion blur around the hips, particularly from behind. Then I tried to capture positions that showed each person’s dance character.
