Pilobolus‘ Shadowlands, performed at the Peacock Theatre earlier this year (it’s touring internationally) is a perfect illustration of the meaning of the word epiphenomenon. Another word I’ve found in the wonderful Luciferous Logolepsy, it means a secondary phenomenon associated with and apparently due to another.

As a journalist with a long history of contributing to some media I’ve fallen foul of several epiphenomena in my time. For example having contributed to one title for over eleven years (that’s four editors), I’m associated with it by those in the dance world whether I like it or not. The fact that for a short while I was staff has not distanced perceptions or peoples’ expectations either. Some seem to consider such an association to be an advantage but for others the jury’s still out.
