“With dance and theatre I think people get very nervous about not knowing the right things. They feel like they’ve missed something, or that they’re not bright enough to watch it. It’s not a test.” This quote by Wayne McGregor reminds me of how I used to feel when I first started writing about dance. I wondered why anyone would listen to me. After all, I didn’t know any more than them at the time. Ironically while I was slowly coming to the realisation that this was partly why my opinions counted, my knowledge and experience of dance of all forms was growing. Now I’m better informed than most of my peers.

Interestingly as my knowledge of the many and varied dance forms and their origins grew, so did the public’s enthusiasm for dance. More people are interested in dance than ever and nowadays the same publications who hired me at the start hire me precisely because I’m so much better informed.

I feel so wonderfully incredibly lucky. It’s not many people who can say their work is their passion and their passion their work.

It’s a priviledge I value immensely.
